Wikipedia has reportedly paused an experiment that used AI to summarize articles on its platform after editors pushed again.
Wikipedia introduced earlier this month it was going to run the experiment for customers who’ve the Wikipedia browser extension put in and selected to decide in, in line with 404 Media. AI-generated summaries appeared on the high of each Wikipedia article with a yellow “unverified” label. Users needed to click on to increase and skim them.
Editors nearly instantly criticized the pilot, elevating issues that it might harm Wikipedia’s credibility. Often, the issue with AI-generated summaries is that they include errors, the results of AI “hallucinations.” News publications operating related experiments, like Bloomberg, have been compelled to subject corrections and, in some instances, reduce their checks.
While Wikipedia has paused its experiment, the platform has indicated it’s nonetheless all in favour of AI-generated summaries to be used instances like increasing accessibility.
